Pied TamarinObserving Animals: Behavioral Studies in Zoos (UCLA Extension)

This course, taught by Los Angeles Zoo Director of Research Dr. Cathleen Cox, provides an introduction to methods and techniques of studying animal behavior. Topics include how to recognize individual animals, producing accurate descriptions of behavior; recognizing various behaviors and organizing them into an ethogram; and methods of collecting quantitative data. The emphasis is on practical firsthand applications of such techniques to behavioral problems and studies. Besides lectures and demonstrations, participants conduct a study project on selected species at the Los Angeles Zoo. Credit students receive homework assignments each week and are required to engage in at least 15 hours of observational study at the Zoo. No prerequisites. Enrollment limited. Classes start on September 25, 2008, and take place on Thursday evenings with the exception of one Saturday training session on October 20.
