Birds

What are birds?

Birds are the only vertebrates that have feathers. All birds are warm-blooded, and they lay eggs. Adaptations such as hollow bones enable most birds to fly, although there are flightless birds, including the ostrich. There are approximately 9,000 bird species in the world; below is the list of birds on exhibit at the Zoo. Please click the bird links to view their fact sheets.
