The Los Angeles Zoo’s annual Latino Heritage Celebration takes place on Saturday and Sunday September 13 and 14, 2008. This festive two-day event celebrates the cultural traditions and heritage of Latin America. Attend exciting activities including performances of traditional Latin music and dances, fun Papel Picado crafts for kids, a delicious Brazilian barbeque and various keeper talks. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the Zoo and see Latin American animals receive special piñatas filled with their favorite treats!

This year, the Zoo is highlighting the peninsular pronghorn, a species native to Baja California Sur, Mexico. These graceful animals are highly endangered and currently only about 200 survive in the wild. Since 2000, the Zoo has provided both financial assistance as well as personnel support to the Peninsular Pronghorn Recovery Project (PPRP). The Zoo’s breeding herd is a part of the Species Survival Plan for peninsular pronghorns.

Earlier this year, the L.A. Zoo was pleased to announce the birth of two male pronghorns! These fawns are the first of their kind ever born at a zoo and can currently be seen in the Zoo’s nursery. Learn more about pronghorns and the Zoo’s conservation efforts to save this magnificent animal, by stopping the conservation table and attending the pronghorn keeper talks taking place on Saturday and Sunday at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
